Options after clearing the Gate exam

GATE is not just an exam, as the name sounds, but a gate to a world full of opportunities. This is one of the prestigious exams held in India, conducted by the joint efforts of IISc and IITs. The popularity of GATE Exam can easily be sought among the students pursuing Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Architecture/Technology. GATE exam is conducted at a national level and clearing this exam not just enables a student to obtain a Master’s degree from premier institutes, but also opens a wide range of job opportunities with Public and Private sector organizations.

Getting a decent score in GATE exam is nothing but a milestone, and equally numerous are the options after the GATE exam:

  • GATE enables you to pursue Master’s program from IISc, IITs and NITs for ME and M.Tech degrees. The core subjects on which one can do Masters are Computer Science, Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Under the umbrella of these subjects there are some prominent disciplines which are in demand like VLSI or Manufacture Engineering. Completing your ME/M.Tech will always land you a great deal of lucrative jobs.
  • The score achieved in GATE exam is one of the primary criteria to hire engineers directly to work with PSUs. The nature of job referred here involves innovations in technology, process and management. If someone is passionate about his/her domain and wants to keep in touch with studies, one can also pursue PhD while doing the job. BHEL, ONGC, SBI, BARC are among multiple PSUs, where a candidate gets a job on the basis of marks scored in GATE exam.
  • GATE exams open the window of opportunity for students not just in India but abroad as well. At one hand, a student can enroll in prestigious colleges of India while on the other hand your scores are valid requirements to get admission in International universities. National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) are among many international universities which offer Master’s degree with financial support as well. To promote the Master’s education, these universities also offer scholarships and financial assistance.
  • GATE exams empower you to become a master of technology and engineering. Being an ME or M.Tech, one can always opt for a career in teaching. You can join top universities as a faculty or lecturer. The top rated universities offer highly paid packages to the GATE qualified students for professor and research scholar roles. Teaching others what you know will always keep you updated about your field of study. Teaching in universities will also get you access to labs and libraries. Such access is extremely valuable for passionate students and can be immensely helpful if one is working on his/her research or pursuing PhD while teaching in universities.
  • GATE toppers can also partner with coaching institutes as part time or full time faculty to train GATE aspirants for the exam. First hand pass outs are given extreme priority in such places for employment and students also benefit from learning from someone who has cleared the exams they are preparing for.

There are many options available after GATE exams.  All you need to choose is which way you want to lead. GATE exam opens the door of opportunities for students to get the job in their dream companies or to research and innovate in the field of what they are passionate about.

Number of attempts for GATE exam for SC, ST, OBC and General

GATE is conducted every year for getting admission in post-graduation program and having a chance of getting a job in PSU companies. Popularity of this exam is increasing day by day. This exam is highly competitive and aspirants consider it as the best gateway for attaining the Master’s degree.

There is always a buzz across different forums and discussion blogs on the internet on one question about GATE exams. The question is maximum number of attempts for GATE exam for SC, ST, OBC and General category.

One can find many different views with respect to this subject on the internet. However, this has been verified by the official website of GATE that there is no restriction on the number of GATE attempts. One can enroll and appear for the exam as many times as they want.

This is one more fact which gives a sense of relief to all of us that there is no restriction on the number of GATE attempts on the basis of caste. An aspirant belonging to any category, be it SC, ST, OBC or General can enroll and appear as many times as they desire. There are even many lecturers/professors who appear in GATE exam to keep their knowledge/skills updated.

However, few points need to be taken into account by GATE aspirants.

  • Aspirants, applying for concerned exam may apply at any age as there is no age bar for appearing in the GATE
  • Till GATE 2014 percentage score validity was 2 years and from GATE 2017 onwards it is 3 yrs.
  • Candidates are eligible only after completion of their Bachelor Degree. Diploma holders are not eligible for the examination. BSc. BCA and BCS (a three years degree) students are also not eligible for GATE Exam.
  • In order to get admissions in post-graduation, candidates need to get marks above the GATE cut off.
  • GATE score is a joining criterion for direct placement in several PSU companies. Although jobs provided by PSU’s have minimum age limit.

The above pointers are correct until the GATE exam organizers announce any change in the eligibility criteria. Candidates can also read about GATE Eligibility in more details on official website.
